DAVIDSON-Those seated in the high school gym last Wednesday night were treated to not only dinner and a show, but lots of laughs.
The Senior Drama Club, who competed in a Drama Festival in Unity, used Wednesday night to practise in front of a crowd before they headed off for the weekend. Ticket sales, along with the silent auction, raised approximately $1,000, which will cover the costs of competing at the festival and the food that was provided Wednesday night.
Play director Arlene Low says that this is the first time in years since a drama group from Davidson School has competed in festival. She says the last time she heard of a group competing was when Vice Principal of Davidson School Jason Low was in high school.
“It’s something that I’ve always done and I wanted to continue doing it,” says Low of why she decided to take kids to the drama festival this year, “I love it.”
Low says their play will be competing against five others from Hanley, Unity, Eston, Wilkie and Eatonia. Davidson competed at one o’clock Saturday afternoon.
Competing at drama festival may prove to be a new type of acting for the students involved. At the festival competition, the play has a strict time limit of 60 minutes and no microphones may be used at any time during the performance. The cast members must start on the floor, and when the music begins, they must carry their props on stage and set up, all of which is included in the overall timing of the play.
The play showcases five superheroes who live in a sanitarium together to hide their true superhero identities. They put on an act, making people think they are crazy, so no one will uncover their secret.
Roaming Reporter “Lois Lancaster” played by Dana Moskaluke is looking for a story. She heads to the Stanley J. Kirby Psychiatric Hospital, where she finds four unique superheroes, who are described by nurse “Dr. Gail Eisner”, played by Aleah Willner, as those who have overactive imaginations and have read too many comic books. Lois just thinks they are crazy.
“Speed Freak” played by J.J. Lang, claims to be able to circle the world in 23 seconds. He also only runs backwards and never wears shoes as they would just burst into flames because of the speed he runs at.
“Dim Bulb” played by William Kwok, has the power of “the clap”. He can shut the lights off with the clap of his hands. Dim Bulb gained his superpowers by sticking his finger in a light socket, and is sure that if he does it again, the strengths of his powers will only increase.
“Kevin”, played by Luke McCreary, is a superhero who prefers to wear his underwear on the inside. Although shy off the start, Speed Freak encourages Kevin to share his superpowers with Lois. He can control the weather with dance, and as Speed Freak puts it, “has the gift of rhythm”.
“Mental”, played by Kaitlyn Crowley checked herself into the sanitarium looking for a mate. By eating radioactive pop tarts, Kaitlyn gave herself the gift of reading minds, but it has its downsides. More than one person in the room and her powers prove faulty as everyone’s thoughts become mixed up. She also has tendency to yell out any random thought that comes to her head.
Lois quickly realizes that she isn’t going to make her big break by reporting on a bunch of crazy superheroes, so decides to set up a bank robbery, so she can be the first reporter on the scene to break the big story.
Little does she know, the superheroes have been lying about being crazy to hide the true superheroes they really are. Using her ability to read minds, Mental sees what Lois has planned and quickly uncovers her secret. Much to Lois’s dismay, Mental has to erase her memory, so the secret of the true superheroes they are can be one that is kept between those staying at the Stanley J. Kirby Psychiatric hospital.
