DAVIDSON - A Los Angeles-area man, calling himself the Spirit Rider and bicycling across North America this summer to spread the message of the gospel, made a stop in Davidson on Aug. 23. Lowell White, 68, began his 6,000-mile trip on June 7, departing from Fairbanks, Alaska, escorted by the city's police force. Covering about 50 miles each day, he plans to reach the Florida Keys this fall. White - who with his wife, Evelyn, leads a marriage support group at his church, The Highlands Christian Fellowship in Palmdale, Calif. - said he is biking across the continent this summer to proclaim that "the Holy Spirit is here." Along the way, he stops in cities and towns to meet with people and to spread his message. White said the trip has brought him closer to the Lord. "While I'm sitting on the bike, He is the only one that I have the opportunity to talk to," he said. "He's bringing me closer to Him." White said that during the trip he has learned a lot about the relationship between God and His creation. "He wants somebody to fellowship with . . . He wants a family, so He created man," he explained. "We don't know just how special we are to God." Usually, White camps overnight, but he also has contacts to stay with in certain cities. He stayed at the campground in Dundurn on the night of Aug. 22, and planned to stay in Davidson the following night. He also visited Davidson Town Hall and several local businesses. He will reach the halfway point of his trip in Winnipeg. He said his average speed has increased on the prairies thanks to the flat terrain. He has a website and is also keeping his friends and family up-to-date using Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. During his trip he is asking for donations to help cover his expenses. White said he has spent most of his adult life working with youth, particularly with the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. He has kept active, cycling across the United States three times previously, as well as marathon running, scuba diving, and hang gliding.
