DUNDURN-Students at Dundurn School have opened their hearts and wallets for their 'Hearts 4 Haiti' support relief fund.
In the weeks following the earthquakes in Port au Prince, Haiti, the student leadership council or S.L.C. decided to set a fundraising goal for $500 hoping that each child would bring $5.
What happened in reality was much more amazing.
Every day the fund became bigger until it reached $1,200.
Then the S.C.C. or School community council decided to offer the proceeds of their successful Pancake Hot Lunch.
As of Jan. 26 the fund has grown to $2,100 and is still rising.
The funds will be directed to Haiti orphanages by local author Peter Eyvindson, who is known to our children as a visiting author.
Eyvindson is affiliated with Broken Wings Missions Inc. and is involved with various orphanages in Haiti.
Dundurn and Hanley students at Hanley Composite School were lead by Mr. Herman's Grade 8 class to collect for Haiti relief as well.
Jan. 18 to 22, the school Student Representative Council collected money with innovative ideas and at last count had made $1,400 to give to the Red Cross.
The local churches and many private citizens also gave to various funds for Haiti's needy.
