Davidson Golf and Country Club lengthens tee boxes

DAVIDSON-Golfers familiar with Davidson Golf and Country Club may have to live with higher handicaps this season.

The golf course's executive is in the midst of a project to make the course more challenging by lengthening the tee boxes on holes 1, 2, 4, 5 and 7.

New tee boxes are being or will be constructed on these holes to make the course more interesting to play, said Reed McJannet, club treasurer.

For example, Hole 4 has a 90-yard fairway. The new tee box on #4 will extend the fairway by 40 yards to 130-yards. The new tee box on #5 will lengthen that fairway by 30 yards.

The old tee boxes will remain in place, so golfers may play the short and long boxes, effectively turning the nine-hole course into an 18-holer.

McJannet said building the new tee boxes involves moving dirt on the holes, leveling the ground and topping it with a layer of sand, laying irrigation pipe and either laying new turf or seeding the tee boxes.

Work on the new tee boxes will continue in the spring, so golfers will have plenty of chances this summer to work on their game.

The golf course has received support for the project from many local donors.
