BEECHY-An area farmer pled guilty to charges laid under The Animal Protection Act on May 13, after dead and starving cattle were discovered on his land.

Scott Sander was fined $3,000 plus a $1,200 surcharge for causing or allowing animals to be or continue to be in distress, following an inspection of his property conducted in March by the Saskatchewan Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

After receiving a complaint, an animal protection officer inspected Sander's farm on March 20, finding about 200 head of cattle in "very poor" body condition. A further 20 dead cattle were also found in sloughs on the property.

A veterinarian who assessed the animals the next day agreed they were in distress and stated they had been neglected during the winter, not receiving adequate food and water. The cattle were seized and assigned to a caretaker.
